Passage 1: “Ban Phones to Improve Learning” by Maria Lopez Cell phones have no place in the classroom. They distract students from learning and make it harder for teachers to maintain attention. A 2021 study found that students scored lower on tests when phones were allowed during lessons. In addition to hurting academic performance, phones also make it easier to cheat. Schools should ban phones during class time so that students can focus on their education and avoid unnecessary distractions.
Passage 2: “Phones Teach Responsibility” by Daniel Brooks Rather than banning phones, schools should teach students how to use them responsibly. Phones are a part of modern life and banning them doesn’t prepare students for the real world. Instead of removing the distraction, teachers can integrate phones into lessons and teach digital literacy. Learning to manage technology in a school setting helps students build self-control and decision-making skills—abilities they’ll need in college and future careers.
